“AND MILES TO FLOW”
A 35mm film which highlights the kinship in spirit shared by kathakali of India, with Noh and Kabuki of Japan and Chinese Opera, with Kathakali occupying centre-stage.
Noh theatre which is a classical art form, dates back 600 years. Coloured with Zen thoughts, it is the very epitome of elegance and refinement. Kabuki which is 400 years old is a dynamic theatre art form. It came into existence and reached its peak during the Edo period from the 17th -19th century. The origin of Chinese Opera dates some 4000 years back to the dawn of Chinese history. It flourished through the dynasties and survived the revolution and retains its appeal to this day. Kathakali, the composite 300 year old Indian classical dance-drama form, is rooted in Hindu mythology. The actors take on super-human qualities to match the stature of the Gods, Kings and demons they choose to depict.
